SCHOOL ROCKS CANADA Brings Big Bands, Big Sponsors, and Big Spirit to Canadian Schools
TORONTO, ON – April 30, 2007 – It started out as a fun way to raise school spirit,
increase musical awareness, and help keep kids in school. However, a few high
school shows later and School Rocks Canada is realizing it has something very big
and very successful on its hands.
“Its exciting to see how a small showcase for an emerging Canadian band has evolved
into such a great initiative and successful School Event Program. I knew as soon as
I saw the reaction of the students at the first show that this was a good thing.
Now after nearly 40 performances we have become a great School Spirit builder as
well as a program that assists the schools to raise much needed funds to use to
build programs, buy equipment for the schools, and in some cases the students choose
to donate the funds they raise to a charity.” says Paul Borg the president of JAAC
Entertainment and visionary behind School Rocks.
In the past year bands like Moneen, Ten Second Epic, The Junction, Afternoon Zero,
and Sydney have all played to 1000+ crowds at staff sanctioned, daytime high school
auditorium shows in and around the GTA… and have had nothing but success.
“Your SCHOOL ROCKS presentation represented a new concept here at North Park, namely
an event that is centered on student interests, promotes the idea of staying in
school, and offers a lucrative fundraising opportunity for the school. In short,
this opportunity was much appreciated by the staff, the students and myself” D.
Dennis, Principal, North Park Secondary School, Brampton, ON.
The great thing about School Rocks Canada is that it not only gets the kids an
amazing music show but it brings the school together as a community while raising
funds for themselves. Also, at the end of every show SRC donates $1000 in cash to
each school it plays at! The way it works is SRC works in conjunction with the
student council, which is responsible for selling tickets to the daytime, sanctioned
in school event. The price per student is determined by the student council
(generally $2-$5) and the school keeps all the money raised. The student council
also runs an SRC poster contest which is intended to stimulate teamwork and
simultaneously help promote the show to make sure they raise as much money as
possible
Ivan Evidente, National Urban Marketing Manager at Universal Music Canada and the
current host of the School Rocks Canada tour is a big believer. “I'm very excited to
be a part of School Rocks Canada. This program not only promotes a positive
environment through music but as well serves as an educational forum for students to
interact and more importantly understand the importance of staying in school. I look
forward to visiting the various schools and am confident that this program will soon
grow even bigger!”
Big sponsors have also seen the positive aspects in the SRC program and come on
board with massive support. Rogers, Samsung, Universal Music, Warner Brothers
Pictures, and Nike/Bauer have all offered help with production costs and/or
promotional gifts for the students at the shows.
Here is exactly what School Rocks Canada brings to a school:
- A LIVE daytime band performance with professional stage production
- 2 Free Rogers Vision/Samsung phones are given away EVERY show
- Free music CD’s from Universal Music
- Free movie passes from Warner Brothers Pictures
- Free sports merchandise donations from Nike/Bauer
- $1000 CASH for every school at the end of the show

The Black Crow Project, developed in response to the basic needs of shelter and community for the less fortunate, is organized around a central belief that music is a powerful tool to reach across social boundaries. The arts, according to the organization’s founders, help communities find focus and belonging so they can constructively move towards common goals.
Katie Ormiston and Jessie Turner are the driving force behind the project. Last November, they, along with co-founder Nina Fleming, successfully launched “The Black Crow Project” as an arts fundraiser event for the Portland Hotel Society (PHS), one of

VANCOUVER, BC
DOORS 7:00 PM SHOW 7:30 PM
**GENERAL ADMISSION**
Fiction Plane is a three-piece pop-rock group from Bath, England, fronted by
Joe Sumner, the son of singer-songwriter Sting. MCA released the band's debut
Everything Will Never Be Okay in the U.K. in 2002 and in the U.S. the
following year, along with the single "Hate". Of the band's latest, the
guitar-oriented Left Side of the Brain, Sumner says the band tried "to make
this epic album into an epic journey of epic proportions". The new material
will be appropriate for Fiction Plane's upcoming tour, which includes opening
for the Police in stadiums across North America as well as a few select club
dates.
Tracks on Left Side of the Brain include the arena-ready "Anyone" and the
single "Two Sisters". Described as having a furious energy live, with a
fervour that is channeled into intense melody and razor-sharp, cynical
lyrics, Fiction Plane cites Nirvana and Pavement as influences.

AN EVENING WITH
LINDSEY BUCKINGHAM
FLEETWOOD MAC'S LEGENDARY SONGWRITER AND GUITARIST
WEDNESDAY, JUNE 20TH
COMMODORE BALLROOM
VANCOUVER, BC
DOORS 8:00 pm SHOW 9:15 pm
Lindsey Buckingham returns to Vancouver after his electrifying performance
last November at The Centre. The set list that night included the Fleetwood
Mac classics Never Going Back Again, Second Hand News, Red Rover, Big Love,
Go Your Own Way, Tusk and many more.
If Lindsey Buckingham had only been a member of Fleetwood Mac for the
multi-platinum smashes Fleetwood Mac and Rumours, that would have been enough
to ensure his place in the history of American pop. But Buckingham is more
than simply one of the musicians behind some of the most successful pop
albums of all time. A talented songwriter and vocalist, accomplished
producer, gifted arranger and virtuoso guitarist, Lindsey is an artist with a
vision. It was Buckingham, for instance, who was instrumental to Tusk, the
follow-up to Rumours, an album that did not live up to sales expectations at
the time but is now regarded as an artistic triumph.
Lindsey's talents have informed not only one of the strongest musical
catalogues in rock history, but have gone into a series of wildly eclectic
and critically acclaimed solo records, including Law and Order, Go Insane,
and Out of the Cradle. His return to the Mac fold included the 2003 smash
album Say You Will, and the single "Peacekeeper." Under the Skin, his first
solo album since 1992's Out of the Cradle, is an acoustic record highlighting
new compositions from one of the best pop songwriters of the last thirty
years. An accompanying tour promises to highlight the truly awesome
contribution Lindsey Buckingham has made to the music in our heads.
Don't miss Lindsey Buckingham live in Vancouver at the Commodore Ballroom on
Wednesday, June 20th.

JILL BARBER
WITH SPECIAL GUEST JIM BRYSON
WEDNESDAY, MAY 9th
THE MEDIA CLUB
VANCOUVER, BC
DOORS: 9:30 PM SHOW 10:30 PM
**GENERAL ADMISSION**
Drawing on influences such as old-time jazz standards, folk balladry and
traditional country, Halifax's Jill Barber has become one of Canada's most
distinctive voices.
She first gained national critical acclaim with the 2004 release of her
CBC-produced EP, Oh Heart. Receiving four-star reviews in Eye, Now and Chart
Magazine, the release also prompted The National Post to hail the
singer-songwriter as "Canada's best cabaret singer." This momentum continued
in 2005 with Oh Heart earning her Female Artist-Recording of the Year at the
Music Nova Scotia Awards and garnered a nomination at the inaugural Canadian
Folk Music Awards. Now on the heels of the critically acclaimed EP, Oh Heart,
is her new album For All Time. With Eleven new tracks that strike a balance
between classic and contemporary songwriting styles, For All Time
demonstrates Jill's keen melodic sense and compelling lyrical abilities. The
album's sensual timelessness instantly draws the listener in, as its subdued
and rich tones showcase her warm and unique vocals.
"...delightfully distinctive, bravely unclassifiable, sexy and vulnerable." -
Toronto Star
Jim Bryson is originally from Canada's "small town" capital city, Ottawa. He
has two critically acclaimed releases ; 2000's The Occasionals and 2003's The
North Side Benches, the latter of which appear on many year-end "Best of",
and just released is his latest Where the Bungalows Roam. Jim is regular
member of both Kathleen Edwards' band and Giant Sand luminary Howe Gelb's
'Sno Angel group.
