In 2002, Mando Diao arrived on the international music scene with hurricane
force. Critics immediately likened the sounds on the band's debut Bring 'Em
In to other garage-y guitar-rock acts like the Strokes and the Libertines.
With the 2004 release of Hurricane Bar, Mando Diao continued refining its
combination of '60s pop songwriting standards mixed with the sounds of today,
not to mention a live show that threw fans into paroxysms of ecstasy. Ode to
Ochrasy, the group's latest, features rave-ups like "TV & Me" and "Long
Before Rock 'n' Roll" as well as adventurous tracks like the
spaghetti-Western-influenced "Good Morning Herr Horst". The group's
incredible feats of touring have inspired huge followings in Germany, Japan,
Sweden, and North America, where the band had headlined and supported bands
such as the Bravery.
Pop Levi isn't your average pop savant. The former Liverpudlian's Ninjatune
debut full-length The Return to Form Black Magick Party shows the L.A.
resident has learned from the masters-T. Rex, Abba, Robert Johnson, Aleister
Crowley. Packed full of hooks and dynamite songwriting, the disc has been
hailed all over the U.K. As well, he's swiftly making inroads in North
America, where Pop and his three-piece band are winning legions of new fans
with a live show that lives up to the hype, and beyond.
Don't miss Mando Diao with special guest Pop Levi and The Films at The Plaza
Club on Saturday, May 5th.

Not much has been heard or seen from Interpol in recent months. Besides a new
song popping up on a Six Feet Under soundtrack last year, the NYC quartet has
maintained a low profile following extensive tours in support of its 2004
disc Antics. That acclaimed album saw the New York quartet broaden its scope
and its audience, while holding on to the hardcore faithful that had loved
the first record, Turn On the Bright Lights. The acclaimed 2002 Matador
debut, which harkened back to beloved icons like Joy Division while offering
something new and modern, took the indie music scene by storm, while the
group's sartorial style meant Interpol was as likely to appear in hip fashion
mags as in Rolling Stone or Magnet. Finally, with a new album on the horizon,
the band is reappearing for a series of live dates, as coolly elegant and
darkly rocking as ever.
Don't miss Interpol with special guests at the Commodore Ballroom on
Wednesday, April 25th.

Leave it to the cheeky blokes in Arctic Monkeys to call their latest single
"Brianstorm" rather than, say, "Brainstorm". But then, the English quartet
has never done things the normal way. One of the first bands to gain
popularity through the Internet, the Arctic Monkeys had already built up a
strong momentum by the time the band issued its first singles in late
2005/early 2006. Both "I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor" and "When the
Sun Goes Down" went straight to #1 in the UK singles chart. The group's
heavily-hyped full-length Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not
became the fastest-selling debut album in British music history, received
critical acclaim, and won the band numerous awards, including (but not
limited to): the 2006 Mercury Prize; Best New Artist in the U.S. PLUG
Independent Music Awards; Album of the Year awards in Japan and Ireland; and
Best British Band and Best British Album at the 2007 Brit Awards. A
contemporary rock 'n' roll guitar act a la the Libertines, the Futureheads
and Franz Ferdinand, the Monkeys have proven themselves as a winning live
band with sold-out club dates and festival appearances across the U.K.,
marked by singalongs and fan participation, as well as a critically acclaimed
2006 North American tour. A new album, Favourite Worst Nightmare, is
scheduled for an April release.
Check out Arctic Monkeys with special guests Be Your Own Pet on Friday, May
4th at the famous Commodore Ballroom.
