La Rocca
The Truth.

Release Date : August 8, 2006.
Label: Dangerbird.
Rating: Engaging. (Screw points. To each his own!)

Note - the album is actually called "The Truth by La Rocca" - but that just doesn't fit our template!

I love this first song! Impressive list of producer credits on this one, and the song holds up with its contemporaries there for sure. It's got that semi-standard new indie sound, really bouncy and lively, filled with chimes and jangly guitars, but the vocals are cool and scratchy, somewhere between Ed Kowalczyk and Rod Stewart. Maybe a bit of David Gray too. Makes for a cool stand-alone sound - this vocal that's reminiscent of a bunch of pop artists, plopped over top of wacky synths and super-cymbally drum sounds. Serious disco breakdown in "If You Need The Morning." This would be a great album for really late night after-after parties - dancing on your last bits of energy until everyone settles down in a snoozy heap. And yet, lo, a surprise, a few songs in, suddenly it's a powerful blues-up. This album turned around pretty quick. From Arcade Fire Lite to full -on David Gray/Palo Alto style balladry. Lovely pianos, and a certain magical quality. Strong songs, strong voice.

Song of choice : "Eyes While Open" is rad. Oh so rad.Though the whimsical nature of "Non-Believer" is also quite lovely. Nice tinkly piano.
