Finally I've gotten around to actually writing about this CD. I kept going back to it time and time again but never knew quite what to say about it. I really like it though. It's got an uppity tempo, solid vocals, interesting stories... but there's something else about it I just can't put my finger on. Today, exhaustively, I have it. There's something decidedly mid-90s Canadiana about it. I don't know these guys' ages but if they're 5 years in either direction from me, they went through the same formative years not being able to get away from the likes of Limblifter and the Odds. And these bands seem to comprise the "reminisce" of Imaginary Bill. I might be totally wrong, but that is what it sounds like. Slightly gritty, yet disgustingly melodic guitars, millions of harmonies, melody-charged bass lines... a modernized version of the British Invasion, clipped and given a Canadian edge. That's what I feel here - it's poppy but not dopey. It's fun and light without being offhanded or vapid. It's a delicate balance, and these guys do it well. Consider them a bit ahead of the times. In 2010, this will be all the rage again.
Song of choice :
"Bleed" and "Hollow" for the guitar work.
